ST BOSWELLS has its own life-saving defibrillator, thanks to the support of the village, writes Sally Gillespie.

Half the money for the £1,300 appliance was raised in the village shop, while local firemen John Melrose and Roy Barrie walked the 62.5-mile St Cuthbert’s Way to raise the rest last autumn.

Mr Barrie said: “As we are both officers in the fire service we have ourselves recently upgraded our appliance with a defibrillator and we felt that our community would benefit for having the use of one.

“Although our achievement in doing the walk was self-fulfilling, to incorporate this as well was equally worthwhile.”

The machine which helps restart and regulate heart beats was installed in the St Boswells Post Office and shop earlier this month.

Mr Barrie said: “It’s very important the village has a defib, as it’s life-saving and, with all due respect to the ambulance service, there can be a time delay. Any time that can be saved by pre-medical care can help. The rewards outweigh the benefit of not having one.”

The officers plan to run a training night next month.

Mr Barrie said: “We are trying to get as many villagers involved in its use as possible and also hope to train people in the use of CPR for basic life-saving.”

The fundraisers hope to raise more money to buy a cabinet to house the machine outside the shop so it is available at all times.
