Great North £1,698

FOUR runners from Kelso have raised £1,698 for the Margaret Kerr Palliative Care Unit being built at the Borders General Hospital.

Jane Woodcock, Wayne Lawrence and Ian and Joanna Stewart completed the Great North Run during which they managed to exchange high-fives with double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah.

Joanna lost her dad, Brian Wain, from Roxburgh, to a brain tumor in February and during his illness it became apparent to the family how much a palliative care unit was needed in the Borders.

Joanna told her dad that she would run for him to raise money for the Margaret Kerr Unit. and the four managed to get into the Great North Run 2012. In January they started their long and hard journey of training for a half marathon.

Jane and Joanna had only ever done a 10k and admitted that they are not natural runners and that the Great North Run was a real challenge. The sponsors started to come in and with the focus on the Margaret Kerr Unit they knew they had to do it even through injuries. Ian and Wayne had both done the Great North Run previously and were a great source of advice for the girls.

Joanna, Jane, Ian and Wayne would like to thank family and friends and everybody who has sponsored them.

They would also like to thank Lees Butcher and James Stewart & Son, Kelso for holding the sponsor forms and collection boxes.

Jane set up a JustGiving page in memory of Brian Wain and it is still available to make donations:, www.justgiving.com/Jane-Joanna4.
