A large crowd of spectators, including members of Borders regional and Tweeddale district councils, witnessed the official opening of the newly-widened Cuddy Bridge, Peebles, in December 1984.
The ceremony was performed by Lt-Col. Aidan Sprot, Lord Lieutenant of Tweeddale.
The bridge work began in August 1982 at a tender price of ÂŁ386,454.
Before cutting a tape and unveiling a plaque, Lt-Col. Sprot said the idea of reconstructing the bridge “goes back to the old county and burgh councils, when it was realised it was not safe to walk along the pavement when crossing the old bridge”. He went on to joke: “I am sure you will agree it has been exciting to actually have a traffic light in Peebles over the last two years.”
