Flood fears ease
SCOTTISH Water is attempting to turn the tap off Galashiels’ flooding problems, writes Kenny Paterson.
The Scottish Government quango is planning to work on the water system in Bank Street and Market Street which proved unable to cope with a flash flood in November, resulting in flooding to a number of shops.
But Scottish Water has warned that disruptions are expected, with Market Street already set to be closed for three days next week for resurfacing works by Scottish Borders Council.
A Scottish Water spokesman said: “We are planning to clean out a culvert which runs down Market Street from the fountain area, and also divert a surface water sewer from Bank Street, to help lessen the likelihood of flooding in local properties.
“We will work hard to minimise any inconvenience to people using the area while this work is carried out, although some parking spaces may be temporarily out of commission.”
The work is expected to take place next month, and has been welcomed by South of Scotland MSP Jim Hume.
He said: “I’m pleased that this much-needed work to the Market Street culvert is finally being carried out.
“The advice from Scottish Water is that the necessary statutory notices are being prepared and I understand that the contractors met last week to schedule the work.
“Scottish Water says that the actual repair work itself should begin in February.
“Property owners at this location will be relieved that the work has now been scheduled, although it has unfortunately taken longer than hoped to get a resolution.”
A total of 23 firefighters tackled flooding on both streets last year, with thousands of pounds worth of damage caused to local businesses.
