Fired up by Downing Street invitation

MEMBERS of a Borders fundraising group are set to pull on their kilts once again for a Downing Street reception.

The Borders Barmy Army (BBA), best known for tackling all their challenges wearing Scotland’s national dress, have been nominated for the Fire Fighters Charity’s Supporter of the Year at the Spirit of Fire Awards.

Following a ceremony held in London’s Park Plaza Westminster Hotel on October 19, members will head to Prime Minister David Cameron’s home.

The Spirit of Fire Awards recognise acts of selfless sacrifice in the fire and rescue community and dedication to the Fire Fighters Charity, which the BBA has supported for the last 18 months.

BBA secretary Lee Myers said: “We are extremely honoured to have received this nomination and invitation, and it will go down as one of our finest achievements.

“We have loved working with the Fire Fighters Charity and this has come as fantastic surprise.

“We especially would like to thank Jan Mattison from the Fire Fighters Charity Scotland for nominating us. We would also like to thank The Kilt Shop in Galashiels for sponsoring the BBA for the awards and providing us with our kilt hire.”

The BBA’s activities for the charity have included a day running on a treadmill in full firefighting protective gear, street collecting, a sponsored day with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service and winning Lancashire Fire and Rescue’s Tough Enough to be a Fire Fighter competition.

Mr Myers added: “We have a great relationship with the charity and the fire service community and we hope to work with them both for many years to come.”
