Fab four in race for palliative care cash

FOUR Kelso runners have raised £1,698 in aid of The Margaret Kerr Unit.

Jane Woodcock, Ian and Joanna Stewart and Wayne Lawrence all from Kelso, took part in this year’s Great North Run earlier this month, after Joanna sadly lost her Dad, Brian Wain, (Roxburgh) in February to a brain tumour. It was during his illness that it became apparent how much a Pallative Care unit in the Borders was needed.

Joanna told her Dad that she would run for him to raise money for the Margaret Kerr Unit and it was there that the first sponsorship money was donated.

Joanna, Jane, Ian and Wayne all managed to enter the race and in January they embarked on their long and hard journey of training for a half marathon.

Jane and Joanna had only ever done a 10k and openly admit that they are not natural runners, and that the Great North Run was a real challenge.

Jane, who was a huge to support to Joanna through a very difficult time, both admitted they hate running and would much rather find an excuse not to run. The sponsors started to come in and with the focus on The Margaret Kerr Unit they knew they just had to do it even through injuries.

Ian and Wayne having both done the Great North Run before were a great source of advice for the girls.

The four Kelso runners completed and thoroughly enjoyed the Great North Run on September 16.

Joanna said: “It was a truly wonderful experience, with the highlight giving twice gold Olympian medalist Mo Farah a high five.”

The girls refusing to take off their medals as they still can’t quite believe that they have ran 13.1 miles.

Joanna added: “Myself, Jane, Ian and Wayne would like to thank family and friends, and everybody who has sponsored us for this much needed facility for the people of the Borders. We would also like to thank Lees Butcher and James Stewart & Son, Kelso for holding the sponsor forms and collection boxes. ”

Jane set up a JustGiving page in memory of Brian Wain and it is still available to donate on – www.justgiving.com/Jane-Joanna4.
