Ex-town fiscal’s lead part in murder trial

Solicitor General Lesley Thomson QC

Solicitor General Lesley Thomson QC

SELKIRK’S former procurator fiscal is to lead the prosecution team in the trial of four men in a high-profile torture and murder case.

Lesley Thomson QC is Scotland’s second most senior legal officer, having been appointed Solicitor General by First Minister Alex Salmond in May last year.

She’s due to prosecute in the Lynda Spence case.

David Parker, 37, Paul Smith, 46, Philip Wade, 41, and Colin Coats, 41, deny murdering Ms Spence after allegedly abducting her from Glasgow last year and torturing her at a West Kilbride house for two weeks. Her body has never been found.

Ms Thomson was given her current role when Frank Mulholland QC was promoted from Solicitor General to Lord Advocate.

Born and brought up in Glasgow, she prosecuted at courts in Selkirk and Peebles from 2000 to 2002 before being appointed to head the Criminal Confiscation Unit.

Three years later, she took over as district procurator fiscal for Edinburgh and Haddington, becoming interim area procurator fiscal for Lothian and Borders in May 2007.

An avid Melrose Rugby Club fan, she was previously assistant secretary at the Greenyards.
