Elderly woman is latest victim of bogus workmen
A 95-year-old Hawick woman has become the latest victim of bogus workmen who, police say, are operating in the Borders, writes Andrew Keddie
She was visited at her home on Friday by a man in his late teens/early twenties offering to repair some cracked roof tiles.
The lady agreed to have the work carried out and a short time later, the man returned stating he had replaced 10 tiles and required £200 in payment. The householder then asked if he could repair a leaking gutter and he agreed, telling her he would return on Sunday, but would require an upfront payment of £100. This was duly handed over, but the man failed to return as arranged.
Police Inspector Paula Clark commented: “Although the numbers of incidents relating to bogus activity remain low, we would like to remind people that any time an unsolicited caller arrives at the door, the occupier should first consider if any work to the property is really needed.
“If they believe work is required, we would advise that they contact known local tradesmen and receive at least three quotations for the works required.
“I would also encourage occupiers who are receiving unsolicited callers to their property, to take the time to note a description of the individual, note down the registration number of any unfamiliar vehicles parked nearby and contact the police as soon as possible.”
The man who conned the Hawick pensioner is described as being six foot tall, of slim build and with short dark hair.
