Cycling duo aim to circulate for Marie Curie
TWO Kelso lads, John Archibold and Gordon Armstrong aim to cycle along the many twisting roads of the Borders for a sponsored cycle in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The cycle has been organised by the two boys and is due to take place today, weather permitting.
They will cycle a 100k circular route through many Border towns and villages, including Coldstream, Duns, Greenlaw, Earlston, St Boswells and back to Kelso.
The boys, both 15, were inspired to do the ride when they recently took up road cycling and a friend suggested doing it for charity and supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care. The two keen cyclists take part in a host of other sports, badminton, tennis, squash, running and football. They took part in the Kelso Civic Week Time Trial with John coming in third and Gordon a close fourth.
These very sporty lads are also planning a static cycle in Sainsbury Kelso in the near future to raise more money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
John said: “This is the first time I have taken part in a sponsored cycle event and it is an entirely new experience for both me and Gordon, but it has definitely been very worthwhile, both from the cycling angle and to raise money for a very worthwhile charity.”
Gordon added “ We have done a lot of training and have been cycling around the Borders and I am looking forward to participating in the 100K cycle. It is all for a good cause and I can’t wait to take on an even bigger challenge next year.”
And Maureen Stevenson, community fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care in the Borders said: “We wish John and Gordon luck in their challenge! It is great to see youngsters taking up a sporting challenge and raising money for charity.
All the money raised by them will be used to support the local Marie Curie Nurses who provide hands-on nursing care for patients with cancer and other terminal illnesses to allow them to spend their final days at home with family and familiar things.
“We are very grateful to John and Gordon for their help and support.”
