Borders tunes of glory

JEDBURGH and Peebles musicians have been in the medals this month.

For the Jedforest Instrumental Band competed in the 2012 National Brass Band Finals at Cheltenham Racecourse on Sunday, having won a regional contest earlier in the year at Glenrothes.

The talented musicians came fifth out of the 18 third section bands there.

A spokesman said: “This is the highest-placed national finals result in the band’s history and an amazing achievement.”

To top it off their flugel horn player was also awarded best instrumentalist.

Meanwhile at the inaugural Innerleithen Youth Brass Band Contest on Saturday the Peebles Development Band, led by Daniel Williamson, came away the development section champions and winners of a gold award.

Adjudicator Sam Hairsine told the contestants: “You’ve put together a very entertaining programme indeed and executed it well. It’s been a pleasure to listen to you.”

The band’s musical director, Mr Williamson said he was thrilled with the development band’s first Gold award, adding: “I am extremely proud of these kids who in the past 12 months or so have risen to multiple challenges, none more so than getting to grips with Viva La Vida having seen it for the first time this week. They are a joy to work with and a credit to the town.”

The band’s next appearance is at the Peebles Burgh Silver Band’s concert in The Burgh Hall tomorrow evening.
