Borders police in plea for help after cyclist dies near Peebles

POLICE have appealed for help in identifying a mystery cyclist who died in a crash on the outskirts of Peebles, writes Bob Burgess.

The man - aged between 40 and 50 - was riding a Peugeot racing bike when he veered across the road and collided with a southbound Fiat Panda.

Passers by administered first aid until paramedics arrived but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It happened around 4.20pm on Monday on the A703 Peebles to Edinburgh road about 300 metres from the town.

Police have so far been unable to identify the man who was wearing a yellow jacket, a blue and yellow cycling top, black cycling shorts and riding a blue and white bike.

Police say it is possible he may have taken ill immediately prior to the accident and have appealed for information.

Sergeant Brian Jones of Lothian and Borders Police said: “There may be someone out there who recognises the description of this cyclist and I would appeal to them to come forward as a matter of urgency.

“I would also appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward - they may have vital information that could greatly assist us in establishing the full circumstances.”

The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours while experts examined the scene and the vehicles.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Galashiels Police Station on 01896 664545 or the Force Communication Centre on 0131 311 3131.
