Jim Douglas of Hawick won the Scottish Borders Tenants Organisation gardening competition.

A 100-year-old Hawick man is celebrating after winning a Borders-wide gardening competition.

James Douglas, of McLagan Drive in Burnfoot, scooped first prize in this year’s Scottish Borders Tenants’ Organisation’s (SBTO) summer garden event.

Mr Douglas, a tenant with Scottish Borders Housing Association, was nominated by his neighbour Anne Knight. He still lives independently and is delighted to win the prize.

The former railway worker may be slowing down a bit, but is happy that people appreciate and admire his efforts – and he still enjoys pottering in his garden every summer.

SBTO chairperson Alison McNeil said: “Mr Douglas has shown great pride in his garden which he obviously gets a lot of pleasure from.

“He is a very interesting gentleman with a real sense of humour and lots of good stories to tell.”
