Appeal for abbey wall crash witnesses

An external wall at Melrose Abbey has been damaged in a collision

An external wall at Melrose Abbey has been damaged in a collision

Costly repairs are going to be required to an external wall at Melrose Abbey after a vehicle collided with it.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward following the incident on March 17.

It is estimated that it will cost a four-figure sum to repair the damaged section of dry stone wall.

PC James Thomson said: “The dyke, which has been re-constructed within the past 18 months, appears to have been hit at a low speed, possibly by a large vehicle carrying out a three-point turn.

“There are no markings or debris left on the road and it looks like the wall has been hit with low impact.

“But it is a hit and run nevertheless, and a costly one, so we would urge any members of the public with any details that may assist the investigation to come forward.”

Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or, alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
