A MOTORIST has been charged with possession of a controlled drug after being stopped in Selkirk.

Lothian and Borders Police are conducting a mock court trial to highlight the dangers of bullying to youths in the Scottish Borders.

The event, which takes place at Peebles Sheriff Court Today (Tuesday 15th May), will allow P7 pupils from Kingsland Primary School to see how electronic bullying can be prosecuted and which agencies are involved.

A fictitious case has been devised where two youngsters have been charged under the Communications Act 2003 after sending a threatening text message to a peer.

All members of the class will participate in the trial, playing the role of victims, witnesses, police officers, security personnel, jury members, solicitors and even court reporters.

The pupils had two sittings in front of a real sheriff and local Procurator Fiscal Morag McLintock will provide a briefing along with Defence Solicitor Sally Swinney on the legal proceedings involved in an electronic bullying case.

I’m just back from an enjoyable week on Arran and I can confirm that it was no warmer over there! It was weird photographing the island’s many palm trees with a backdrop of fresh snow on Goat Fell.

I met Dad and his friend Stewart at a layby in the charmingly named Elvanfoot, just at junction 14 off the M74. Elvan means very white in Brythonic (al-gwyn), usually referring to a bright stream in place names. While I waited on their arrival, I had the lucky chance to stand and watch a mistle thrush feeding. It pecked about in the field adjacent to me, the ground around a low wooden trough disturbed by sheep’s hooves.
