I’m delighted to read that Souters have decided to appoint the first female standard bearer and look forward to being there on the historic day.
However, I think it is time to have yet another change, despite the “Aye Beeners’” resistance to change.
As I have suggested in the past, I think that the already-installed PA system in the Market Place should be put to even better use by being used to introduce and announce the individual standard bearers and the flag they are casting as they mount the platform. Visitors are bemused and puzzled, and always ask: “Who is that?” and “What flag is this?” It would seem to be good etiquette to announce these.
Judging by the number of likes this suggestion received on the Bygone Selkirk Facebook page, I think that this would have lots of support. Look up “Casting of the Colours” on YouTube to hear how it could be.
