A number of residents in the riverside area of Langholm moved their valuables to the upper floors of their homes before evacuating them after the flood-swollen River Esk threatened properties throughout Saturday.
A rest centre was set-up at Langholm Academy for residents in George Street until the risk subsided. Sandbags were distributed and the council also set up a flood hub where equipment such as floodgates were made available..
Community councillors, police and Dumfries and Galloway Council workers made door-to-door calls alerting householders and offering support.
The pedestrian suspension bridge was closed and and the town band advised to call off a concert at the Buccleuch Centre.
The Christmas lights switch-on and ‘Santa Run’ were cancelled. A number of trees were blown down and firefighters pumped water out of the Royal British Legion club cellar on Saturday.
