NEWLY-formed duo Nick Keir and Stephen Quigg – formerly of The McCalmans – return to the Wynd Theatre in Melrose next month.
The pair were regulars at the venue alongside Ian McCalman in his self-titled band, before the latter decided to retire and finish the group in 2010 after 46 years on the road.
But Nick and Stephen are back, deciding to join up after nearly a decade in the band together.
From Edinburgh, Nick formed his first band Finn mac Cuill while at Stirling University and toured with them before joining 7:84 Scotland in 1979.
He joined The McCalmans in 1982 when Hamish Bayne left the band and worked with them for 28 years.
Away from The Macs, Nick has produced three well-received solo CDs and toured extensively with The Tolkien Ensemble, appearing with screen legend Christopher Lee. He is also a member of the Holbaek Ensemble in Denmark playing a mix of Scots and Irish traditional music.
Stephen was born in Ayrshire but now divides his time between Saltcoats and northern Jutland in Denmark. He regularly supported The McCalmans in the 1980s before joining the group following the death of Derek Moffat in 2001.
Stephen is well known on Scotland’s folk scene after more than 30 years of singing about his homeland.
He also plays guitar, bodhran and occasionally banjo when he remembers to bring it, and audience members often come from far afield to his gigs.
The Wynd Theatre show takes place on Saturday, September 3, with tickets priced at £10 (£8 concessions).
