I would like to thank the Co-operative food customers who donated to The Salvation Army’s “You CAN Help” appeal.

Boxes were placed in each store for customers to buy an extra tin or two. Two rolling cages of donations from stores in the Borders as far apart as Earlston, Burnfoot and Langholm were delivered to The Hawick Citadel Corps.

In recognition of the region-wide donations, we passed on some of the donated food to partner churches in other Border towns. The food will be packed into bags to provide 5-7 days of meals for one person.

During the past year we have seen an increase in the demand for assistance. Many young single people who are being rehoused struggle to get started. And low-income families get into difficulty with unexpected bills.

These are just some of the 25 referrals we received in Hawick last month.

Around 60 parcels are distributed monthly in the central Borders. Other food banks are being set up in Peeblesshire and Berwickshire.

A bag or two of food helps many people through a short-term crisis. The food that has been donated through this appeal will help us maintain that good work.

Major Steven Turner

(commanding officer, The Salvation Army, Hawick Corps –

(on behalf of Borders churches)
