Selkirk youngsters were on song on Friday.

For it was the hometown youngsters who took first places in the two sections of the Borders heat of the Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition.

Pictured are vocalist Darren Knox and pianist Katie Watters, along with the runners-up, singer Cecily Withall and pianist Rosie Archbald, both from Kelso, who now go through to the finals of the District 1020 competition at Stewart’s Melville College, Edinburgh, on March 10. Contestants had travelled from as far away as Biggar for the event in the music room of Selkirk High School.

The three judges admitted that their task was very difficult and Rotary’s district young musician officer John Gray said: “Such was the high standard that any one of them would acquit themselves with honour at the grand final.”
