Researching family history in the Borders has been made easier with the help of the Heritage Hub in Hawick.
People from across the region recently gathered to browse census returns, old parish records, monumental inscriptions and directories.
They discovered how easy it is to trace back a family history to 150 years, using the Glendinning family for a demonstration. The guests then created their own family story to prove that it is more than just names and dates.
At the Heritage Hub, people could look at documents such as poor law records, and school, police and militia lists from the 1790s, plus valuations of property and council minute books that date back to the 18th century.
The Heritage Hub has received positive comments from participants who agreed that the environment was welcoming and informal. At the end of the evening “Tracing Your Scottish Borders Ancestors” information sheets were handed out so people can begin their own ancestral trail.
