Surgeon steps out for MKPU

A SURGEON at the Borders General Hospital is about to undertake a gruelling 56-mile run in South Africa to raise cash for the Margaret Kerr palliative care unit .

Orthopaedic specialist Christopher Tiemessen has 12 hours in which to complete the Comrades Marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday. He previously completed the marathon in 2009.

He commented: “I am sincerely motivated to test myself in doing this run in memory of my late good friend Mrs Sheila Cox who died last Christmas in Ward 11 in the existing palliative care unit at the Borders General.”

And Christopher, who has been at the BGH for 14 years, said he was delighted to be raising funds for the new unit.

He said: “Even in orthopaedics we need palliative care services from time to time and the fact that the new unit will be attached to the hospital is absolutely ideal. Such an excellent facility will be a great advantage to the people of the Borders.”
