a ROBERT Burns concert with a difference will be hosted by Hawick Music Live! this month.

Harmonious Sounds – Frances Cooper (soprano), Rodger Long (violin), Shona Jones (cello) and Colin Dundas (piano) – will introduce Burns with Elegance, a concert of works influenced by the Bard. It will include Robert Schumann’s setting of Burns poetry, from his song cycle Myrthen, written as a wedding present to his wife, Clara.

Also included are arrangements of four Scottish folk songs for voice and piano trio by Joseph Haydn. The Lovely Lass of Inverness and How Can I be Blithe and Glad will also be performed. Harmonious Sounds will also play Haydn’s piano trio in E minor.

Works by two modern Scottish composers will be on show – Claire Liddell’s arrangements of Burns songs for voice and piano from The Kindling Fire and Ae Fond Kiss, The Wee Cooper o’ Fife and Auld Lang Syne by Stuart Murray Mitchell.

Harmonious Sounds were formed in 2009 and try to add a twist to their concerts – folk songs taken into a chamber music setting and performed with style.

Hawick Music Live! president Gordon Macdonald said: “This is an unusual type of Burns programme which will extend the reputation of Robert Burns and the composers he was associated with.”

Tickets are priced at £10 (students £2) for the concert on Sunday, January 29 at 2.30pm.
