Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Paul Wheelhouse, joined council leader David Parker on Friday to open the £3.6million Galashiels flood protection scheme.

Work on the project, which will safeguard industrial and educational sites in Netherdale, was started in October 2013 and was 80 per cent funded by the Scottish Government.

Mr Parker added: “These will provide vital protection to the important assets in Netherdale, including Scottish Borders Campus and the industrial estate, and also businesses and residents in the town centre.

“This will not only reassure the public, but will also allow growth and development of the industrial area in Galashiels, and hopefully also help businesses and residents throughout the town obtain improved insurance premiums and excesses.”
