Award-winning charity Columba 1400 were the recipients of a donation by Borders Change Foundation Charity, from their annual dinner.
Gill Murray and Marie Clare Drummond received a cheque for £17,000 from the charity dinner organiser James Marjoribanks.
The charity runs residential programmes, followed by ongoing support, to give young people the strength and courage to find their own unique voice and purpose – and to use that voice to inspire families and communities on return.
Columba 1400 has provided a turning point in the lives of nearly 6,000 young people and adults who have participated in its programmes since 2000.
Marie Clare Drummond, head of development for Columba 1400, said: “Columba 1400 is a charity with the aim of creating positive outcomes for young people from tough realities all over Scotland, but with this donation we will be able to concentrate on young people solely in the Borders in 2015.
“We have developed a three to five-year plan and have already secured funding from the Big Lottery to run two Young Peoples Leadership Academies, which will concentrate on young people from six Borders schools with their teachers or support workers.
“With this donation we can carry out a third program to cover the three remaining school communities and this will set our work on a strong footing and create supportive peer networks across the Borders, enabling more individuals to reach positive destinations.
“Columba 1400 is also working closely with Youth Borders and Scottish Borders Council to develop strong partnerships and ensure we impact on the lives of those from the toughest realities.
“We are very grateful for all those that attended the dinner in September this year, which helped raise this very generous donation which will make a difference to the people of the Borders.”
James and Elaine Marjoribanks, who organise the charity dinner each year, were delighted with the outcome.
James told The Southern: “With this money Columba 1400 can do a lot more to change lives for the good in the Borders and we are happy to have played a small part in making this happen.
“Thanks to all our loyal supporters of the dinner and their continued generosity, and we look forward to seeing you all again on September 4, 2015, at our next dinner.”
