Fire has ripped through a large house on Kingsmeadows Road in Peebles.

Two local crews were alerted around 6.10pm on Friday to what was thought to be a chimney fire - but found a rapidly-developing outbreak spreading through both the ground and first floors.

Extra appliances, including specialised units, were called in from across the Borders, the Lothians and Edinburgh.

At the height of the operation 50 firefighters and ten appliances were involved.

Because of the intensity of the flames, crews were forced to withdraw from tackling the fire from the inside of the building.

Water was pumped from the nearby River Tweed and poured onto the burning property from ground monitors.

Ambulance crews stood by but there were no casualties.

An investigation into Friday’s blaze is underway.
