FOUR centuries of warfare involving the Maitlands was resurrected at their family home, Thirlestane Castle recently.
The 16th-century building near Lauder saw swordsmen from both sides of the border re-enact previous bloody battles.
Included was the battle of Neville’s Cross in 1346, between Scotland and England which resulted in the death of Robert Maitland.
Bob Brooks, marshal of the Hotspur School of Defence, said: “We were delighted to be asked to demonstrate historical swordplay and combat skills at such a magnificent location.”
Between demonstrations the public had the chance to handle some of the weapons and armour used.
