Exercise scheme wheeled out

A scheme at Kielder is under way to get more people out and about on two wheels.

The Forestry Commission and cycling charity CTC are among those supporting the CycleXtra initiative which offers free cycle loans and tuition in the forest park until the end of October.

Heading the venture locally is mountain bike guide Rick White, 49, who said: “The idea is to get more people cycling more often.

“For a lot of people who haven’t ridden in a while, there’s a confidence issue. Others simply prefer to go out in a group.

“We plan to offer coaching tips, polish technique and take rides into the magnificent terrain around Kielder.”

Rides leaving from Leaplish Waterside Park are being staged throughout the week and outings can be tailored to specific needs.

Funding for CycleXtra has come from Cycling England, a non-departmental public body aiming to get more people cycling and funded by the Department for Transport.
