Eight qualified beauty therapists and hairdressers are now working towards their HNC in Fashion Make-up at Borders College – a new course that combines study at college with work experience.

The students recently started work with Debenhams at Edinburgh’s Ocean Terminal and Princes Street, and with House of Frazer on Princes Street. They are working one day a week within the stores and studying for two days a week at college up until the end of their course in June.

On their work placement they are working with a range of quality cosmetics, building on their product knowledge and promotional and retailing skills. Students will work with clients looking for practical product demonstrations, skincare consultations or even full makeovers.

Louise Renwick, who has just started work with House of Fraser on the Clarins counter, said: “I really enjoy my work placement as I get to experience what it’s like to work in a high demand, competitive environment and I’ve learned a lot about selling and practical techniques over the past few weeks. It’s also good for my CV to be working with a highly recognised and popular brand such as Clarins.”
