SCIENTISTS at the Eskdalemuir observatory have confirmed that December was the coldest they have recorded since records began a century ago.
The mean temperature for the month was –2.3C. The previous low was –2.25, recorded in 1981.
And coldest night of the month was December 3 at -14.6C. On January 7, 2010, a low of -15.1C was measured.
December’s lows helped make 2010 the coldest year at Eskdalemuir since 1986. The amount of rain plummeted to 1,303mm compared with the near-record 2,214mm 2009.
The mean temperature for the year was 6.67C, the lowest for almost 25 years.
