Police have appealed to the local community for help following damage to Hawick’s historic 1514 (Horse) monument.
This vandal attack took place sometime between 5pm on Friday (NOvember 18) and 9am on Monday (November 21). The ottom section of the flag pole was snapped off in the incident.
A police spokesperson said: “This monument is a major landmark and asset to the people of Hawick. It plays a significant and pivotal part in a number of its customs and traditions, and to have it vandalised by mindless people will be difficult to comprehend for many local people.
“There will be people within the town who will know who has caused this damage and we would urge them to come forward and assist police with our extensive enquiries.
“We would particularly like to hear from anyone who was in the area over this time period and witnessed the incident taking place, or anyone who has information which could lead to the identification of those responsible.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Hawick Police Station on 01450 375051.
