COUNTRYSIDE communities have been warned by police to be on their guard against thieves targeting quad bikes and similar vehicles.
Farmers and landowners are particularly vulnerable to the gangs who are suspected of operating from a shopping list.
Last week thieves were disturbed at a property in Tweedsmuir as they drove off a £4,000 red Honda 500 quad. The owners watched as it was driven towards a waiting getaway vehicle parked near the A701 Leadburn-Moffat road.
Sergeant Andy Leigh stressed: “Communities should be alert to suspicious activity and the presence of vans and similar large vehicles in the vicinity of farm buildings and nearby roads – especially during the hours of darkness.”
And owners are being told to tighten security and not leave keys in vehicles.
