The death of a pensioner in Melrose is being treated as a murder enquiry.

The 70-year-old woman died today following an incident at Priorwood Court sheltered housing complex last week.

Police and emergency services were called to the premises around 4.45pm on Sunday, April 9.

The woman was taken to Borders General Hospital.

Police say this is now being treated as a murder enquiry and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

David Thomson, 69, appeared at a private hearing at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Tuesday, April 11 in connection with the incident. He made no plea to an accusation of attempted murder of a fellow resident and was remanded in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Healy of Lothians and Scottish Borders CID said: “This is being treated as an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection our enquiries. Anyone with concerns regarding this incident can speak to their local community officer or can contact Police Scotland through 101.”
