THE head of CID in the Borders has spoken of the menace of organised crime in the region.
Detective Chief Inspector Linda Ormiston was commenting after a successful multi-agency operation on Friday when three houses in the Burnfoot area of Hawick were raided.
As a result of the searches, which were conducted under warrant, significant quantities of cash, drugs, contraband tobacco and alcohol, along with counterfeit clothing and footwear, were seized.
Police estimate the total haul to be worth in the region of £25,000.
The operation involved local officers and special units from Lothian and Borders Police, along with trading standards and HM Revenue and Customs personnel.
A 36-year-old man from Hawick was arrested and charged and a report sent to the procurator fiscal.
DCI Ormiston told TheSouthern: “We are committed to working in partnership with other agencies to tackle the menace of serious and organised crime groups in our communities.
“This operation sends out a strong message to those involved in this type of activity that we are targeting this sort of criminal enterprise and it will not be tolerated. I encourage the public to pass information to us about criminals operating in their neighbourhood.”
