Bogus gas man in Hawick sparks police plea

POLICE are hunting a bogus workman who tried to rob an elderly woman by claiming he was gas man.

He called at the woman’s house in Liddesdale Road in Hawick around 11.30 on Friday morning.

When the pensioner told the man she not have gas he changed his story and said he measuring the property next door but had forgotten to bring pen and paper.

The woman was already suspicious so she shut her door and immediately alerted the police.

She told officers that conman was between 5’ 6” and 5’ 10” and wearing a dark tracksuit which had a white emblem on the left breast. He was of medium build with short, light-coloured hair.

Lothian and Borders Police have appealed for witnesses or information.
