Conmen latch on to SBC scheme

BORDERERS have been warned to watch out for bogus workmen claiming to be part of Scottish Borders Council’s free home insulation offer.

Households in Galashiels have complained to the local authority that they received unsatisfactory work by a firm that they later discovered was not part of the Scottish Government scheme.

Lothian and Borders Police are now involved and hope to track down the culprits.

SBC’s free loft and cavity wall insulation initiative is only being delivered by installer Everwarm in partnership with local social enterprise Changeworks.

Chris Morris, centre manager at Energy Saving Scotland’s advice centre, said: “The number of complaints received remains small but we have already taken action.

“If you’re not sure whether the person on your doorstep is working for the council’s free insulation offer, call the Energy Saving Scotland advice centre on 0800 512 012 to verify their ID; look for their company logo and headed paper, business cards and uniform, and don’t commit to anything unless you’re confident that they’re genuine and work for Everwarm or Changeworks.”
