They are being hosted by local families to give them a chance to live in a healthier environment for a time.

Some months ago Jedburgh Rotarians learned that these girls don’t have very much and decided to provide them with footwear. It appears that where they come from a pair of new shoes costs the equivalent of a whole week’s wages.

The Clarks shoe shop in Galashiels offered a discount on any boots and shoes the club bought for the girls – and so they arrived at Clarks to have their feet measured and then choose their footwear. They departed with several pairs each.

The host families will also make sure that the visitors return to Belarus with some extra clothing as well.
