EMERGINg Stow artist David Cass will make his debut in the Scottish Gallery on Wednesday.

Unearthed includes selected works from the Jolomo Award nominee’s time in Florence, Brussels, Paris and at home in the Borders.

David said: “I spent three months in Florence on a Royal Scottish Academy Scholarship.

“My fellow scholars and I took regular train and bus journeys around Tuscany.

“The gently moulded, flowing, fern green autumn countryside proved to be an immense source of inspiration – the hilltop town San Gimignano, with its ancient golden sandstone walls, was somewhere I was particularly drawn to.

“Between January and June of this year I divided my time between Brussels, the Borders and Paris.

Though painted depictions of Brussels are few, the city did in fact play the lead role in constructing this exhibition.

“Brussels, in spirit, is present in every painting. Except from a few envelopes and postcards bought in Florence, the majority of these works are painted upon surfaces found in the flea markets and petits riens of Brussels.”

Unearthed runs until October 1 in the Scottish Gallery on Edinburgh’s Dundas Street. Visit www.davidcass.co.uk or www.scottish-gallery.co.uk for more details.
