What a cracker of a show – the sun shone, the crowds came, the horses jumped to the best of their ability, the sheep rested peacefully in their pens, and, all in all, it was one of the very best Yarrow shows.

Show secretary, Anne Turnbull, told The Southern: “Carterhaugh was a wonderful setting for the 94th annual event and grateful thanks must go to the Duke of Buccleuch, and in particular to the Bowhill farm manager, Mr Sion Williams, for allowing us to use the Weatherhouse Field and for all his help.

“The biggest thanks of all, however, must go to Mr Alec Telfer, the show yard convener, who works tirelessly throughout the week prior to the show to make sure that all is in place for the big day.”

Sheep entries were very strong, with Billy Renwick of Blackhouse coming out top with the champion Blackfaced sheep and indeed, following on with the Overall Champion Sheep in the show.

Other section winners were Norman Douglas, Catslackburn ( Cheviots), Alan Cowens, Philiphaugh Old Mill Farm ( North Country Cheviots), Chapelhill Farm, Peebles ( Park Sheep), Ewan Pate, Craigsford Mains, Earlston (Prime Lambs), and A. McClymont, Kirkstead (Blue- faced Leicesters). The Overall Championship in the Preserves, Baking and Industrial section was once again won by Jane Telfer from Broadmeadows Farm. “Jane is a master of the culinary arts,” said Anne.

The horse section this year was well subscribed, with Melissa McTaggart on Sir William John winning the Overall Horse Championship. Working Hunter Champion was Charlotte Bunting on Baillie Boo, whilst Clive Storey on Masquerade claimed the Overall Coloured Horse Champion.

The trophies were presented by Mrs Alison Brown, wife of this year’s president Mr Derek Brown, and Alison was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Miss Anna Williams, daughter of the show’s vice president, Mr Sion
Williams.

The 2014 show saw the retiral of the show secretary and treasurer after 21 years. Mrs Anne Turnbull was presented with a beautiful Love Seat from all her friends on the committee of the Yarrow and Ettrick Show. Anne has worked tirelessly for the show over the years and was thanked for all her work by Mr Alec Telfer.
