ONE of Kelso’s best-known businesses has scooped two prestigious awards in the inaugural Herald Family Business Awards.
The awards, which celebrate excellence in Scottish enterprise, were held on December 4 at a black tie event at the Grand Hotel in Glasgow. And Kelso-based A Hume Country Clothing took home not one, but two awards – Scottish Family Business of the Year in the small/medium category and Fastest Growing Family Business.
The firm faced stiff competition but impressed a judging panel that included Tom Craig, chairman of Craig Corporate; Hugh Lightbody, chief officer at Business Gateway; Danny Bulloch, a Glasgow-based area director of business banking at RBS, plus The Herald’s business editor Ian McConnell and group business correspondent Mark Williamson. Archie Hume, pictured above with wife Karen, commented: “A Hume was founded in 1929, and there’s always the fear when you take an established family business in a new direction that it will all go horribly wrong. Our website has transformed our business, and enables us to take our exclusive menswear and ladieswear collections to an eager global market.
“The whole team has worked tirelessly to achieve these aims and this is an incredible endorsement of their efforts; these awards are a sign that we’re on the right track.”
