THERE’S only a month to go before the deadline for this year’s Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards 2010-2011.

The closing date for applications is Friday, February 4.

Sponsored by The Southern Reporter, the Business Excellence Awards will celebrate Borders companies that demonstrate excellence in their fields.

Business owners and managers are invited to showcase success in areas such as growth, employee development, international trade and innovation.

The winner of last year’s Independent Retailer of the Year Award was A Hume (Outfitters) Ltd of Kelso. Archie Hume, who is the third generation of his family to run the business, says the awards were a great boost to his business, both in raising the company’s profile and in providing a morale boost to owners and staff.

“We know we provide a good service, and we work hard to satisfy customers in the shop and online.  It was really good to have our professionalism and commitment publicly recognised, and to be shortlisted for the award. To win the category was a bonus and a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our employees.”

The Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards 2010-11 will recognise the achievement of businesses across seven categories:

z New business of the year, sponsored by Business Gateway

z Innovation of the year, sponsored by Prostrakan

z Employer of the year, in association with the Federation of Small Businesses

z Growth business of the year, sponsored by Purves Chartered Accountants

z International trader of the year, sponsored by Scottish Chambers International

z Independent retailer of the year, in association with the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce

z Creative Marketing award, sponsored by the South of Scotland Creative Clusters project

Purves Chartered Accountants, Melrose, is sponsoring the Growth Business of the Year category for the second year. Corporate finance director Kevin Lamb says: “We all know that these are challenging economic conditions for Borders businesses, but this can also present new opportunities. Many entrepreneurs are taking advantage of this and are continuing to drive growth in their businesses. The Business Excellence Awards are a way to celebrate the achievements of local companies, and we are pleased to be associated with them. We would like to encourage all businesses to enter the awards, and gain recognition for their hard work and endeavours over the last 12 months.”

The awards will be presented at a lunchtime event at the Scottish Borders Campus on March 18, and all shortlisted companies will be invited to the presentations.

Scottish Borders Council is taking the lead role in co-ordinating the awards and is delighted that partners from the private and the public sector have agreed to support them.

All Scottish Borders businesses are invited to apply. To download an application form log on to www.ourscottishborders.com and for further information email business@scotborders.gov.uk
