Farmers are invited to a practical information day to learn more about livestock diet, parasites and what the market wants at Jedburgh on Wednesday (September 24).
The meeting is part of the Scottish Government and SRDP-funded Future Proofing Scotland’s Farming programme, run by Soil Association Scotland and Quality Meat Scotland (QMS), with support from NFU Scotland and SAOS.
Former ruminant nutritionist, Robert Gilchrist, now a knowledge transfer specialist for QMS’ industry development team, will talk about what to feed and making the best use of what farmers grow at home.
Moredun Research Institute senior scientist and parasites expert, Dr Philip Skuce’s talk is ‘Know your Enemy’ when he will update farmers on how to avoid parasites. And Jim Gibb from beef processors A.K. Stoddart will talk about the effect of fluke on meat prices and advise on what to produce for best prices.
Soil Association Scotland’s agricultural development manager, Lyn White said: “It’s a very practical, hands on approach to what farmers should be doing themselves. It’s looking at what farmers have got at home and making best use of that.”
Estimates suggest liver fluke can knock as much as £3 off the value of each animal.
Attending farmers will also visit Renniston, near Jedburgh, managed by Matthew Ladds, where Mr Gilchrist will make specific dietary recommendations for the farm’s cattle.
