More diversions set to hit Galashiels drivers

TWO Galashiels streets will be closed for the next two Sundays as the latest stage of the town’s inner relief road project causes more disruptions.

Stirling Place and Park Street will be shut for road planning works and resurfacing on January 22 and 29.

Scottish Borders Council say traffic travelling on Channel Street will exit to High Street across the pedestrian zone instead of turning into Park Street.

But special arrangements will be made for business access to Stirling Street, via the existing junction at Market Street, which will be two-way on both Sundays.

The road closures are part of the latest works to Galashiels town centre which will cause problems for motorists for another six weeks.

Work has restarted on Ladhope Vale, reducing the adjoining Currie Road to one lane in the direction of Station Brae roundabout.

The disruptions are due to last until the beginning of March, when two-way traffic flow will be reintroduced to Currie Road and Ladhope Vale.

Ewan Doyle, programme manager at Scottish Borders Council, said: “We now have an uninterrupted run to complete phase three of the Galashiels Inner Relief Road, and the road system in the vicinity of Stirling Street will be changing over the next six weeks or so.

“We are grateful for the public’s continued patience with the traffic management provisions on Ladhope Vale as this is critical for the safe operation of the diversions over the coming weeks.”

On completion of the scheme, direct access from Ladhope Vale – which will be turned from one-way to two-way – to Market Street will be removed and replaced with a new Stirling Place junction.

And Stirling Place will witness ongoing water diversions and drainage works until February 13.
