At their weekly Primestock sale John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 792 hoggs and 350 ewes and tups.

Hoggs again a great do although paperwork makes them look slightly easier after last week’s flier, more needed for buyers requirements.

At their weekly Primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 87 clean cattle, four OTM cattle, 56 beef cows, 2,839 old season lambs and 524 ewes.

Bullocks (26) averaged 215.8p per kg and sold to 245p (-2.7p on week), heifers (58) averaged 218.9p per kg and sold to 248p (+1.2p on week), three young bulls averaged 172.9p and sold to 208p (n/c on week), four OTM Cattle averaged 185.7p and sold to 202p (n/c on the week) and 56 beef type cows averaged 125.9p per kg and sold to 170p (+0.7p on the week.

Old season lambs averaged 188p per kg (-12p on the week) £80 per head and sold to £107, top price 223p per kg for Texel. Ewes averaged £88.81, and sold to £141 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £94.47 and light ewes sold to £74 for BF and averaged £57.93.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward eight prime cattle, one young bull, 12 over 30 month cattle, 5,443 prime hoggs and 2,736 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle were very short of requirements and more needed on a weekly basis. Top price of 211.5p for a Charolais heifers shown by A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen. Young bulls sold to 177.5p for Charolais from Enzieholm.

OTMS sold well and followed national trend selling to 159.5p for a British Blue cow shown by W.H. and D.A. Gass, Nunscleugh. Black and Whites sold to 135.5p from J.T. Cowan, Low Moat.

A similar show of 5,443 prime hoggs forward to a full ring of buyers all keen for sheep again. All classes of hoggs were similar on the week. The sale averaged 193.4p/kg (SQQ 197p). Top price of 259p per kilo for Beltex from Oakwood and to £116 per head for Texels from Sunnycroft.

A smaller show of 2,736 cast ewes and rams forward to the usual buyers.
