At their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler on Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 763 lambs and 439 ewes.

The early week slump in the lamb trade saw a distinct revival with vendors receiving returns above expectations.

At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 109 clean cattle, 103 OTM cattle, 2,486 prime lambs and 656 ewes.

Bullocks (55) averaged 175.9p per kg (+4.2p on the week) and sold to 194p from Low Middleton gross £1294 from Honeyburn. Heifers (54) averaged 176.3p per kg (+2.1p on the week) and sold to 197p Lurdenlaw, gross £1187 from Upper Nisbet. The 103 beef type OTM cattle averaged 110.3p per kg and sold to 156p, gross £1349 from Humebyres.

The 2,486 prime lambs averaged 174.3p per kg (+0.1 on the week) and sold to £87.50 a head from JE Runciman, St Leonards and 202.7p per kg from M/s Lamont, Dunslaw.

The 656 ewes averaged £61.18 (+£3.76 on the week) and sold to £96.50 from J and J Campbell, Wedderlie.

Prime cattle were met with another brisk trade. Top price of 187.5p and 185.5p for British Blue heifers from G.P. and E.A. A smaller show of 3,645 prime hoggs were forward, with numbers of export weight (36kg to 42kg) lambs short of requirements.

The sale average was 170.6p overall with SQQ (35kg to 45 kg) at 173.4p per kilo. The sale was topped at 236p per kilo for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Harker, Lanehead.
