At St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 184 clean cattle, 109 OTM cattle, 4,004 prime lambs and 979 ewes.

Bullocks (97) averaged 175.4p per kg (-2.1p on the week) and sold to 202p, gross £1463 from Longnewton. Heifers (83) averaged 175.6p per kg, (-3.4p on the week) and sold to 2.14p from East Loanend, gross £1202 from Upper Nisbet. The four young bulls averaged 160p per kg, +2.6p on the week and sold to 170p, gross £1156 from Humebyres. The 109 beef type OTM cattle averaged 110.4p per kg and sold to 160p from Wester Middleton, gross £1374 from Ramrig.

The 4,004 prime lambs averaged 173.4p per kg,(-1p on the week) and sold to £95 a head from RD Rennie and Son, Sydenham and 195.6p per kg from A and HC Smith, Crumhaughhill, Hawick. The 979 ewes averaged £58.30 (+£13.62 on the week) and sold to £118 from The Campbell Partnership, Burnhouse Mains.

WOOLER

At their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler Mart last Wednesdday, in conjunction with the Annual Christmas Show, the firm had forward and sold 1,151 lambs and 245 ewes.

At the show the champion pen of lambs was awarded to Roddam Estates for a pen of Texel.x lambs weighing 47kg and realising £90 to the judge Mr J. Curle, Bowsden. The reserve champion pen also went to Roddam Estates for Beltex.x weighing 44kg and realising £78, also going to the judge.

Weather conditions again proved a major factor, but trading vendors receiving a very similar return.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 44 prime cattle, 23 over 30 month cattle, 4,245 prime lambs and 6,154 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A plainer show of prime cattle was on offer and met a firm trade once again. Top price of 176.5p for a British Blue heifer from J. Magnay, Smallholms, and purchased by Mr J.
