At their weekly primestock sale on Monday, John Swan Ltd sold 113 clean cattle, two OTM cattle, 57 beef cows, 1,170 old season lambs, 23 new season lambs and 271 ewes.

Bullocks (38) averaged 207p per kg and sold to 230p (-1.5p on week). Heifers (75) averaged 207.3p per kg and sold to 241p (+5.7p on week). Two OTM cattle averaged 184p and sold to 185p (n/c on the week) and 57 beef type cows averaged 122.3p per kg and sold to 179p (n/c on the week).

Old season lambs averaged 166p per kg (-12.4p on the week) £77 per head and sold to £102, top price 191p per kg for Texel.

Ewes averaged £71, and sold to £119 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £80, Light ewes sold to £89 for Chv and averaged £48.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 11 prime cattle, eight OTM cattle, 4,488 prime hoggs and 2,855 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle met a sharper trade with both new purchasers and vendors in attendance. More cattle required to meet buyer’s requirements. Top price per kilo and per head was a Limousin heifer from Messrs Fiddler, Barrow Ling, Southwaite, which sold for 217.5p (£1,359.38) purchased by M.J. Wharton, Wigton. Another Limousin heifer from the same home sold for 213.5p (£1,259.65) to the same buyer.

A smaller show of 4,488 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Following national trends, all classes of prime hoggs were easier on the week, especially hoggs which were out of spec (over 45 kilos) due to large numbers throughout the country. Export weight and lightweight hoggs continue to sell well, being short of buyers’ requirements. The sale averaged 184.5p overall (SQQ 189p). Top price per head was £102 for Beltex from Whitehill Cottage & Texels from Golden Lane, and to 235p per kilo for Beltex from Waterside.
