In conjunction with John Swan’s weekly store sale on April 7, there was the Show for The William Harvey Lindisfarne Goblet kindly sponsored by Alnorthumbria Vets and expertly judged by Richard Mitchell, Highlaws, Morpeth. The championship was awarded to D. A. Thompson, Trewhitt Steads for a lim.x steer (pictured). Reserve Champion was also awarded to Trewhitt Steads for a Lim.x Heifer weighing 375kg and selling at £900 also to Alan Lamont, Dunslaw.

At their weekly sale of primestock on April 8 John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 322 Hoggs and 114 Ewes, hogg numbers tight tail end lots harder to cash, heavy, and inspec types easy to cash.

Ewes a poor show with lambing shed sorts appearing rapidly, good types again easily cashed.

John Swan Ltd sold 92 clean cattle, 6 OTM cattle, 34 beef cows, 1591 old season lambs and 271 ewes.

Bullocks (35) averaged 208p per kg and sold to 223p (n/c on week), heifers (56) averaged 211.5p per kg and sold to 247p (-3.5p on week), 1 Y bull sold to 164p (n/c on week), 6 OTM cattle averaged 156.1p and sold to 195p (n/c on the week)

34 beef type cows averaged 142.4p per kg and sold to 177p (+19.4p on the week), Old season lambs averaged 195p per kg (+2p on the week) £90.05 per head, SQQ 210p and sold to £112, top price 227p per kg for Texel. Ewes averaged £94.37, and sold to £140 for Suffolk.

Heavy ewes averaged £102.86 light ewes sold to £115 for Chev and averaged £73.73.

Longtown

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 16 prime cattle, 1 young bull, 5 OTM cattle, 11 spring lambs, 5,726 prime hoggs and 2,295 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday April 9 2015.

11 Spring Lambs sold to £113, £107 and £106 for Charollais’ from Wester Parkgate, with lighter lambs far more in demand than the heavy ones.

Another fine show of 5,726 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers with the average 3p up on the week at 198.1p per kilo overall, the SQQ 206.6p was also up 3p. Export hoggs and lightweight hoggs remain very dear, averaging well over £2 per kilo with heavier hoggs similar on the week, more handyweight hoggs could be sold to advantage. Top of 254p per kilo for Beltex from Oaktree Drive and to £119 per head for Texel from Roselea.

The 2,295 cast ewes and rams were well short of buyer’s requirements and resulted in a record overall sale average for the centre of £114 per head. Heavyweight ewes were up another £12 on the week with lightweights up £8 and rams up £11.
