At their weekly primestock sale on Wednesday February 18, John Swan Limited had forward and sold 593 hoggs and 262 ewes.

Hogg numbers similar with all classes in keen demand, all vendors returning home with greater returns.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 108 clean cattle, eight OTM cattle, 56 beef cows, 2,377 old season lambs and 431 ewes.

Bullocks (38) averaged 217p per kg and sold to 240p (-2.5p on week), heifers (67) averaged 218.8p per kg and sold to 242p (+1.3p on week), three young bulls averaged 161.7p and sold to 183p (n/c on week), seven OTM cattle averaged 183.1p and sold to 215p (-1.6p on the week) and 47 beef type cows averaged 141.9p per kg and sold to 197p (+6.8p on the week).

Old season lambs averaged 187.4p per kg (-8.5p on the week) £80.14 per head and sold to £106. Top price 228p per kg for Beltex. Ewes averaged £78.18, and sold to £141 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £87.95; Light ewes sold to £91 for Chev and averaged £60.13.

longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 20 prime cattle, 20 OTM cattle, 5,899 prime hoggs and 4,050 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Both prime and OTM cattle were once again a marvellous trade, very competitive with other local centres.

Another grand show of 5,899 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers present trade was steady all day.

Export weight hoggs and lightweight hoggs continue to sell at recent high rates, also hoggs 50kilos plus remain similar, however a larger show of 44-48kilo hoggs were forward with many being too thick and harder to cash. Only quality types sold easily.

The sale averaged 191.5p/kg (SQQ 195.8p).

Top price of 252p per kilo for Beltex from Whitehill Cottage and to £105 per head for Texels from Bombie.

A larger show of 4,050 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade similar on the week.
