At their weekly Primestock Sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 786 hoggs and 410 ewes

More hoggs on offer, tail end lots appearing, resulting in all classes looking easier as nationwide, fleshed inspec types still easy to trade.

At their weekly primestock sale on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 96 clean cattle, seven OTM cattle, 47 beef cows, 1,564 old season lambs and 806 ewes.

Bullocks (29) averaged 219.5p per kg and sold to 246p (+1.8p on week), heifers (64) averaged 217.5p per kg and sold to 254p (+3.5p on week), two young bulls averaged 178.6 and sold to 218p (n/c on week), seven OTM cattle averaged 183.1p and sold to 215p (-1.6p on the week) and 47 beef type cows averaged 141.9p per kg and sold to 197p (+6.8p on the week).

Old season lambs averaged 195.5p per kg (+2.5p on the week) £82.58 per head andso ld to £109, top price 236p per kg for Beltex. Ewes averaged £68.48, and sold to £129 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £77.69; Light ewes sold to £89 for Chev and averaged £57.68.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward seven prime cattle, one young bull, 28 OTM cattle, 5,834 prime hoggs and 3,401 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle once again met a fantastic trade, many more required to meet buyers requirements. Top price per kilo and per head in the steer section was a Limousin at 231.5p, £1,203.80 from Messrs Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage. The 28 OTM cattle met a fantastic trade, around 8p-10p dearer on the week, many more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

A much larger show of 5,834 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers present trade started steady and rose all day. A tremendous show of Blackface and Cheviot hoggs were forward along with an exceptional entry of heavyweight hoggets. All classes of hoggs were similar on the week and many more hoggs could have been sold to advantage. Lightweight hoggs remained dear and were very short of requirements.

The sale averaged 194p/kg (SQQ 197.2p). Top price of 275p per kilo for an outstanding pen of Texels from MacTaggart Bros, Station Yard and to £113 per head for Texels from Wood Farm.

A very similar show of 3,401 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade for all classes similar on the week. Heavy ewes to £146 for Texels from Edendales. Hill ewes to £98 for Lleyns from Whitcastles.

Rams to £146 for Texels from Wood Farm and Suffolks from Knock.
