At their weekly Primestock Sale last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 588 hoggs and 196 ewes.

Hogg numbers tight but a fair show forward resulting in all classes achieving extra on the week.

At their weekly Primestock Sale on Monday, John Swan Ltd sold 72 clean cattle, six OTM cattle, 40 beef cows, 2,151 old season lambs and 476 ewes.

Bullocks (24) averaged 217.7p per kg and sold to 230p (n/c on week). Heifers (47) averaged 221p per kg and sold to 258p (+7.1p on week). One young bull sold to 218p (n/c on week), six OTM cattle averaged 184.7p and sold to 201p (+16.7p on the week) and 40 beef type cows averaged 135.1p per kg and sold to 195p (+1.4p on the week).

Old season lambs averaged 193p per kg (+2p on the week) £81.30 per head and sold to £104, top price 224p per kg for Beltex. Ewes averaged £78.32, and sold to £133 for Texel. Heavy ewes averaged £90.90; Light ewes sold to £93 for Chev and averaged £61.98.

longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 25 prime cattle, two young bulls, 21 OTM cattle, 4,760 prime hoggs and 3,432 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Another similar show of 4,760 prime hoggs were forward to the usual ring of buyers all keen for sheep again. All classes of hoggs were sharper on the week and many more hoggs could have been sold to advantage. Lightweight hoggs also sold well and short of requirements. The sale averaged 200.3p/kg (SQQ 202.1p). Top price of 275.8p per kilo for Texels from Station Yard and to £123 per head for Texels from Kirk House.

A much larger show of 3,432 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers. Heavy ewes remained similar.
